Apps make the world go round. From ordering food to finding the love of our life, we rely on an app for that. Similarly, job searching is no different - there are apps to help you during your job hunt.

Are you ready to find the perfect job match, with the help of an app? Here are the best mobile and desktop apps, all job seekers in Malaysia should know about!

1. Salary Hacks

As a job seeker, you’d want to find a position that pays well. Even if it means switching careers, or learning new skills. One way to figure out how much you should be earning is by researching the average salary for the job you’re interested in jumping into.

But keep in mind that salary guides are nothing more than references. Some might argue that the numbers presented tend to be inflated and aren’t an accurate depiction of reality. However, there’s no harm utilising it as a form of a guide - to give you an idea of what you should be paid.

2.  Apps 2 Help You Spy on Company Culture

Thanks to the strong app game we have today, it makes it easier for job seekers to find out the different cultures behind each company. Some useful apps out there include:

A. Glassdoor: With this app, you’ll be able to find real-life reviews from employees of different companies. Apart from getting an inside look into the working culture of different companies, users are also able to apply for jobs or search for openings with the help of the app.

Glassdoor is available on both mobile (Android and iOS) and desktop! Check out Glassdoor here!

B. Wantedly: Find what you love with Wantedly. The social recruiting platform’s main aim is to connect different people to jobs based on their preferred working culture and passion. In other words, Wantedly wants you to find a job that you love.

Other interesting aspects of the Wantedly app are:

I. Wantedly Visit: Users who indicate an interest in a particular job posting, you can schedule a casual site visit to experience the company’s workplace culture. And even certain aspects of the job - without any hidden costs.

II. Wantedly Chat: Just like Slack or Google Hangout Chat, Wantedly Chat allows users to converse on a secure platform. Previous discussions can also be found using the app’s smart search.

III. Wantedly People: Scan name cards to your phone using Wantedly People. The app also automatically filters information such as ‘Job Title’ and ‘Address’. This way, users will be able to store multiple name cards in one handy device. No more name card messes!

Wantedly is available on both mobile (Android and iOS) and desktop! Check out Wantedly here!

3.   Find Work-Life Balance

Some of us (including me) have a tough time coping with the demands of our work and personal lives. It takes skill, dedicating and a god-like level of nitpickiness for someone to successfully split their week and hours between work, family time, hobbies, and personal goals. Unless you’re a Type A individual, of course.

Thankfully, there are app developers out there who understand our struggles. Here are some apps to help you juggle both your work and personal life:

A. Asana: The key to a great work-life balance is to plan out your week as best as you can. Or if you work in a team, to ensure that your colleagues complete the major project in a timely manner. Enter Asana, a web and mobile app, created to help teams organize, track, and manage their respective duties! There’s also a calendar to help you plan and track major upcoming projects (yay!).

Asana is a free service with paid premium features available. Check out Asana here

B. Timeneye: One reason to work-life unbalance is procrastination. When we procrastinate during work hours, we tend to stay at work until late to finish our daily tasks. Or worse, we bring our work home.

Timeneye is a time tracking app that monitors how you spend your time on your work or even hobbies! You can sync the app with popular task management apps (e.g. Asana) to ensure that you have enough time to complete your daily work tasks! Pretty cool, right?

The app is available for both mobile and desktop use (Android and iOS). It’s free for personal use. Check out Timeneye here!

C. Focus Booster: As an INFP (What is this?), this app has been somewhat of a lifesaver for me. The aim of this app is to improve your focus and productivity - with the help of the Promodoro technique.

Basically, the app will help you divide your tasks into bite-sized sessions. Each session is 25 minutes long, with a short 5-minute break in between. Users who need the additional “push” can choose to enable a ticking clock sound.

Think you might need it? Well, the app is free and available for desktop use. Premium features are available at an additional cost. Check out Focus Booster here!

4.  On-point Skills

Recruiters and hiring managers are a tough bunch. They spend most of their day sifting through resumes, interview candidates or scouting for talents. Because they’re browsing through hundreds of resumes on the daily - it’s no wonder they’re nitpicky. Recruiters just want to find the best talents for their clients!

One way to get recruiters to notice you is by having on-point skills. Of course, we’ve found some apps for you to consider:

A. Grammarly: Hands down, the easiest grammar and spelling checker to use! Grammarly is free to use, just download it as an extension to your Google Chrome. Use it to double-check the grammar and spelling on your resume and cover letter. Maybe your perfect English might just astound the hiring manager into considering you! No promises though.

Grammarly is available for free use on both mobile (Android and iOS) and desktop. Check out Grammarly here!

B. Canva: How do businesses stand out from the crowd in such a saturated market? They get creative! And so should you. With Canva, you’ll be able to create banners, infographics, collages to help decorate your resume. Just remember to make it tasteful, and you’ll be good.

Canva is available for free use on both mobile and desktop. Check out Canva here
